Almost two years ago many lives were changed in an instant when a tragic event claimed the life of a young and promising officer named David Tome. The loss of Dave had a profound effect upon his family, friends, and his fellow officers from the Northern York County Regional Police family and the brotherhood of officers within York County and beyond.

During the past months the investigation, arrest, and subsequent trial of the person responsible for the death of Officer Tome was conducted. Since the investigation was centered upon a subject responsible for the death of a NYCRPD officer, an outside agency was the primary investigative agency for the prosecution. This case was investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police and was prosecuted by the York County District Attorney’s Office.

A trial was completed yesterday with a jury returning a finding of guilt against the defendant in the matter. This finding of guilt will never restore the lives of all of those affected, but should serve as a reminder to the community of the integrity of the judicial system, the risks those who protect take on a daily basis, and the fragility of human life.

On behalf of the members of the Northern York County Regional Police Department I would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Pennsylvania State Police for the professional and extensive investigation which was the foundation for the prosecution, and to York County District Attorney Thomas Kearney who provided the resources necessary to allow Chief Deputy Prosecutor Timothy Barker to ultimately present such an compelling case before the jury that secured the guilty verdict. I would also extend a thank you to the members of the community who held all of us in their thoughts and prayers throughout this difficult time. It is my hope you continue to embrace the family of Officer Tome as they continue to face life without their cherished husband and father.

We now will continue this journey together with hope and faith in the system of justice and the community we strive to protect every hour of every day.

With Deepest Gratitude On Behalf Of All Agency Members,

Mark L. Bentzel

Chief of Police
